THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE A BASIC FOUNDATION FOR IDENTIFYING,
COLLECTING, AND PROCESSING EVIDENCE AT CRIME SCENES, AND INCLUDES COVERAGE OF
DEATH INVESTIGATIONS, FINGERPRINTS, BLOOD SPATTER ANALYSIS, TRACE EVIDENCE
COLLECTION, AND COURT PRESENTATION. LECTURE, FIELD AND LAB EXERCISES ARE USED.

INVESTIGATING CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN

PROVIDES THE PATROL 1ST RESPONDER AN IN DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF PRELIMINARY CHILD
ABUSE INVESTIGATIONS. COVERS CHILD ABUSE LAWS, PROTOCOL, PROSECUTION
GUIDELINES, MANDATORY REPORTING PROCEDURES, INTERVIEWING TECHNIQUES AND
PROTECTIVE ISSUES. GENERAL OVERVIEW OF SEX OFFENDERS - TYPES AND COMMONLY USED
TERMS/DEFINITIONS. THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE PATROL OFFICERS
INSTRUCTION IN PHYSICAL AND SEXUAL CHILD ABUSE INVESTIGATIONS. TOPICS INCLUDE
VICTIM INTERVIEWING, PEDIATRIC FORENSIC MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS, CASE PROSECUTION,
AND MANDATORY REPORTING.

INTERVIEWING CHILD VICTIMS & WITNESSES

THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE INVESTIGATORS WITH TECHNIQUES FOR
INTERVIEWING CHILD VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ABUSE. SPECIFICALLY THE TECHNIQUES OF
DECREASING SUGGESTIBILITY, AND INCREASE NARRATIVE DETAIL FROM THE VICTIM. THESE
PROCESSES ARE SHOWN IN THE VALIDATION OF RESEARCH-BASE METHODS. STUDENTS WILL
PARTICIPATE IN ROLE PLAY AND EXERCISES USING ACTUAL CASE SAMPLES FROM CHILD
VICTIM INTERVIEWS AND CASE EXAMPLES FROM TRIALS. COURSE DESIGNED FOR POLICE
INVESTIGATORS, OFFICERS AND DISTRICT ATTORNEY INVESTIGATORS TO DEVELOP CHILD
INTERVIEWING SKILLS TO GAIN FORENSIC INFORMATION WHILE TRYING TO AVOID
RE-TRAUMATIZING THE CHILD.

DEATH INVESTIGATIONS

THIS COURSE IS INTENDED TO EXPAND THE FIRST RESPONDERS' KNOWLEDGE BASE OF DEATH
SCENE INVESTIGATIONS. OFTEN THE FIRST RESPONDER IS CHARGED WITH DETERMINING
WHETHER A CASE IS SUSPICIOUS OR WARRANTS FURTHER INVESTIGATION. THIS COURSE IS
DESIGNED TO PROVIDE THE FIRST RESPONDER WITH THE INFORMATION TO MAKE THESE
DECISIONS.
INSTRUCTION COVERS DETERMINING CAUSE OF DEATH, RIGOR MORTIS, POSTMORTEM
LIVIDITY, DECOMPOSITION, SUICIDE VS. NATURAL CAUSES, ACCIDENTAL DEATHS, LOCATION
OF WOUND/INTERPRETATION, RELATIONSHIP OF WOUND TO BODY, INSTRUMENTS
USED, AND SPECIAL PROBLEMS IN INVESTIGATIONS.

HOSTAGE NEGOTIATIONS

THIS IS AN INTRODUCTORY COURSE FOR THE NEW NEGOTIATOR OR THE PATROL OFFICER
WHO MUST NEGOTIATE WITH A HOSTAGE TAKER. IT IS INTENDED TO EXPAND THE FIRST
RESPONDERS' UNDERSTANDING OF THE DYNAMICS AND PSYCHOLOGY OF HOSTAGE TAKING,
THE PROCEDURAL RESPONSES NECESSARY TO DEAL WITH HOSTAGE EVENTS, AND
NEGOTIATION TECHNIQUES.

Domestic violence is a serious problem that occurs in every culture and social group.  It has
devastating physical, emotional, financial and social effects on women, children, families and
communities across the country.  Studies show that worldwide, between one quarter and one
half of all women have been abused by intimate partners, and between forty and seventy percent
of all female murder victims are killed by an intimate partner.  The purpose of this training is to
provide a fundamental understanding of the issues facing law enforcement officers when they
respond to domestic violence calls. The officer completing this course will
be able to:

1. Define domestic violence.
2. Recognize types of abusive behavior.
3. Understand how domestic violence may be learned.
4. Understand why some victims remain in abusive relationships.
5. Discuss the dynamics of abusive relationships.
6. Recognize some of the myths surrounding domestic violence.
7. Learn officer safety techniques for responding to domestic abuse calls.
